3 Coffee Hacks For a Better Cup of Joe

A recent study found that your daily coffee habit may help boost longevity. Here are 3 coffee hacks to make sure your caffeine habit is benefiting your health and not harming it.


Swap nondairy creamers for coconut milk creamer, coconut milk or coconut oil.

Nondairy creamer is made from corn syrup solids and partially hydrogenated oil, better known as trans fats. The havoc trans fats place on your body is something you want to try and avoid. 

My favorite add for my coffee is coconut milk. When blended in the blender the oil emulsifies and you get a nice creamy topping on the coffee.

Swap flavor shots with your favorite extracts.

My favorite is vanilla or almond extract. During the winter, I opt for peppermint. Peppermint Mocha anyone?

Many of the flavor shots are loaded with sugar as well as artificial flavors and colors. 

Swap some or all of the the sugar for cinnamon.

Adding a couple teaspoons of sugar to a few cups of coffee can quickly get you to your sugar limit. Adding cinnamon to coffee gives it a natural sweetness. The cinnamon works for you in other ways too. It is an anti-inflammatory and antibacterial spice, so it is the perfect addition, especially during the winter months.

Swap fat-free milk with organic whole milk.

Whole milk from grass fed cows offers omega-3  benefits as well as keeping you full longer.

7 Great Ways To Use Coconut Oil

I recently posted about my current top 10 Costco finds. One of the most commented on items was the Coconut oil. We use it for just about everything in our home. Here are 7 ways we love using Coconut oil.

1. Natural Vapor Rub 

Anytime we have a cold in the house I whip up a batch of homemade vapor rub. It is perfect for rubbing on the chest to help with congestion or I rub on the bottom of our feet and then put on socks.

Homemade Vapor Rub

1/2 cup coconut oil

2 drops peppermint oil

2 drops eucalyptus oil

4 drop OnGuard

Mix and keep in fridge until needed.

2.  Face wash

I have always had a problem with acne and sensitive skin. The only two things that have worked for me is “oil washing” with coconut oil and black soap. During the winter, I primarily use my coconut oil wash. I like to use a 2:1 ratio of coconut oil and baking soda. It is a perfect moisturizer and exfoliator all wrapped in one wash.

Homemade Coconut Face Wash

1 cup coconut oil

1/2 cup baking soda

2 drops melaleuca essential oil

2 drops lavender essential oil.

Mix and keep in a resealable container.

3.  Hair conditioner

We like to use coconut oil as a pre-poo conditioner/hot oil treatment. We simply section hair and slather hair from root to tip. Place hair in a shower cap for 30 minutes and then proceed with washing routine. For a deeper treatment, you can sit under a hair dryer.

4.  Toothpaste

Coconut oil is a natural anti-bacterial and has shown to be an effect tool to prevent gum disease. ****This also works well as a face exfoliating**** 🙂 

Simple Coconut Toothpaste

1/2 cup coconut oil

1/2 cup baking soda

1 tbsp bentonite clay

2 drops peppermint

2 drops melaleuca

2 drops clove

Mix and store in a condiment jar that is squeezable.

5.  Muscle soothing rub

As an active family, we usually have someone that is experiencing some muscle pain. We have a container muscle rub that I refill regularly.

Muscle Rub

1/2 cup coconut oil

5 drops Deep Blue essential oil or 2 drops peppermint & 2 drops melaleuca

1 teaspoon cayenne pepper

Mix all ingredients and use for any muscle or joint pain.

6.  Eczema Relief

Three of my four daughters battled with eczema. This run eased the pain and dryness well. One of them had to take the coconut oil internally as well to rectify the issue.

Eczema cream

1/2 cup coconut oil

10 drops lavender essential oil

Mix and keep in fridge till needed.

7.  Non-Dairy Coffee Cream

I enjoy starting my day with a cup of coffee and I often start it with a cup blended with coconut oil, honey, and cinnamon.  The coconut oil gives the coffee a similar mouth feel as cream but offers a multitude of health benefits. The key is blending the coffee, honey, cinnamon and coconut oil in a blender to get a good mixture.

3 Ways to Get a Better Night’s Rest

There have been numerous research studies that show the importance of getting a good night’s rest. Most recently there is a correlation between using smartphones and tablets to restless and poor sleep. Here are three ways to help you achieve a better night’s rest.

  1. Aromatherapy – Smelling lavender enhances the waves in your brain that encourage relaxation. I like to put a drop on my pillow before bed or use my essential oil diffuser.
  2. Sleep Mask- For those that are sensitive to lingering light while sleeping a contoured sleep mask can make drifting off to sleep more comfortable and easy.
  3. White Noise-There are many white noise apps available on smartphones today.  They were lifesavers while the triplets were babies, I used Relax Melodies while they were infants.  It is free and has a variety of sounds.

Best thing for a good night’s rest is to turn off electronics 2 hours before going to bed. This allows your body to acknowledge it is time for sleep.

Essential oils are extremely powerful and concentrated. They are nature’s medicine. They have the ability to penetrate the cell membrane and attach unwanted virus’. More and more, people are using and understanding the power of plant based medicine and the beautiful thing, there are no side effects. You cannot build up immunity to them and they work.
